It is possible to talk about two different types of infertility. Primary infertility is the situation where no pregnancy has occurred before and pregnancy does not occur for at least 1 year. Secondary infertility is the situation where pregnancy does not occur again despite at least one pregnancy having occurred before. What is Infertility?

Infertility is defined as the situation where a couple cannot conceive a child naturally despite regular and unprotected sexual intercourse. In order to be considered infertile, which is known as infertility in medicine, the couple must have regular and unprotected sexual intercourse for 1 year. However, this period is reduced to 6 months for couples over the age of 35.

In couples with no health problems, the probability of pregnancy occurring monthly with regular and unprotected sexual intercourse is 25%. The probability of pregnancy with unprotected and regular sexual intercourse for one year is 85%, and in two years, it is 90% on average. However, in 15% of couples, infertility may occur in either partner. In 1/3 of couples with infertility problems, infertility is seen in the woman and in 1/3 in the man. While increasing female age is a factor that increases the risk of infertility, sperm problems may also occur in men older than 55.

What are the causes of infertility in women?

In women under the age of 35, if pregnancy does not occur despite regular unprotected intercourse for 12 months, infertility is suspected. In women over the age of 35, if pregnancy does not occur for 6 months, it is considered a sign of infertility. Infertility in women is diagnosed after a comprehensive examination by a specialist gynecologist. How is Infertility Treatment Performed in Women?

Infertility treatment varies depending on which partner is affected. Infertility in women can be resolved with a 1-2 month treatment, but in some cases, longer treatments may be required.

In cases where infertility occurs due to the lack of regular ovulation, treatment can be provided with fertility drugs. Fertility drugs administered in tablet or injection form stimulate ovulation and ensure egg development.

Another method used is insemination treatment. During the ovulation period, when fertility is at its highest in women, the man’s healthy sperm cell is placed into the uterus. In this way, fertilization is attempted.

In the method known as in vitro fertilization, the main purpose is to increase the number of egg formations. The hormone drugs given both ensure egg development and prevent early ovulation. The eggs that have reached the required maturity are fertilized in a laboratory environment with sperm cells taken from the man.

How is Male Infertility Treated?

The aim of male infertility treatment is to eliminate existing sexual dysfunctions and to ensure quality sperm production. For this purpose, some lifestyle changes can be recommended to patients. Quitting the use of harmful substances such as cigarettes, alcohol and drugs is an important factor in the treatment process.

Drug therapy can be applied to increase sperm quality. With the drugs given, testicular functions, sperm production and sperm quality can improve. In patients with very low sperm counts and those who do not respond to drug treatment, sperm collection can be used. In cases of anatomical problems such as blockages in the canals that prevent sperm passage, surgical intervention can be used.
