The formation of pregnancy begins with the embryo attaching to the mother’s uterus, and the pregnancy process lasts an average of 9 months and 10 days (280-282 days). Since the exact date of pregnancy cannot be known in patients with regular menstrual cycles, the first day of the mother’s last menstrual bleeding is taken as the basis when calculating the pregnancy process. In patients with irregular menstrual cycles, the week of pregnancy is determined according to the ultrasound examination performed at the first examination. Thus, the fertilization process of the egg is also included in the pregnancy process. The pregnancy process, the start day of which is determined in this way, is calculated over 40 weeks, or 280 days. Knowing the week of pregnancy allows for the correct planning of routine check-ups and examinations necessary for the health of the mother and baby. In this way, mothers and fathers-to-be can have information about the development of their babies and can apply to a specialist physician for the necessary check-ups.

What is Pregnancy Week by Week Tracking?

From the first weeks of pregnancy, the development of the baby and the health of both the mother and the baby are monitored by a specialist doctor. In this way, early diagnosis of possible medical problems, developmental problems in the baby and problems that may occur at birth can be determined in advance. However, knowing the changes that the expectant mother will experience during pregnancy allows her to make the necessary observations and evaluations for both herself and the baby’s health. Therefore, it is important to provide the expectant mother with guidance information so that the pregnancy can be followed up week by week. What are the symptoms of pregnancy week by week?

The 40-week pregnancy process is divided into three main periods, each three months long. These periods are called the 1st, 2nd and 3rd trimester.

  • Trimester refers to the first three months of pregnancy,
  • Trimester; the period between 3-6 months,
  • Trimester covers the period from the 6th month until birth.

What is the 1st Trimester of Pregnancy?

The first 12 weeks of pregnancy are called the first trimester. During this period, it is possible to encounter the following changes while following the pregnancy week by week;

  • Week: This is the period when the egg is in the fertilization process and pregnancy has not yet started. The fertilized egg is called a zygote.
  • Week: This is the week when the fertilized egg cell unites with the sperm cells in the tubes and matures. The baby’s development in the womb begins.
  • Week: Pregnancy hormones begin to be secreted in the body. The development of the baby in the womb accelerates. The accumulation of “amniotic fluid” begins in the uterus, thus making the inside of the uterus a protected place for the baby.
  • Week: The embryo period begins as of this week. The embryo in the mother’s womb is about the size of a poppy seed. The mother may experience symptoms of early pregnancy such as nausea, breast tenderness and swelling, frequent urination, increased body temperature and palpitations.
  • Week: During this period, the placenta and umbilical cord develop, allowing the baby to receive full efficiency from nutrients. Since menstruation is delayed, expectant mothers and fathers usually become aware of the pregnancy during this period.
  • Week: The baby’s mouth, nose, ears, arms and legs are formed during this period. At the same time, there are changes in the mother’s hormone levels.
  • Week: The baby is now called a fetus.
  • Week: The fetus has reached the size of a bean and is approximately 10 mm in size.
  • Week: During this period, as the baby’s muscle and fiber tissues develop, the expectant mother may begin to feel its movements.
  • Week: The fetus grows rapidly between the 8th and 10th weeks, reaching an average size of 3 cm during this period. Cartilage and bones are formed.
  • Week: The baby’s brain, lungs and kidneys develop. The mother’s belly begins to become noticeable from the outside.
  • Week: This is the last week of the first trimester, and the baby’s vocal cords develop. Thus, the first three months of pregnancy are completed.

What is the 2nd Trimester of Pregnancy?

The period between 13-24 weeks of pregnancy is called the second trimester.

  • Week: The baby is approximately 7.5 cm in size. Fingerprints are formed. Morning sickness experienced by the mother-to-be disappears during this period. The milk ducts develop and the first breast milk begins to form in the breast.
  • Week: The baby is approximately 9 cm in size and weighs 40 grams. The symptoms of fatigue, weakness, nausea and vomiting experienced during pregnancy are left behind. Therefore, the 2nd trimester is a more enjoyable process for many expectant mothers.
  • Week: The baby begins to develop sensitivity to light. Lung development accelerates as amniotic fluid fills the respiratory system.
  • Week: The baby’s legs develop further. Some expectant mothers may start to feel the baby kick during these weeks. This is called revival. The mother’s belly also becomes more visible.
  • Week: Both the baby and the expectant mother begin to gain weight more quickly. During this period, the baby weighs 100-150 grams. It can easily move its joints and skeletal system.
  • Week: The baby’s senses of hearing, feeling and taste develop. While the tubes are forming in girls, the penis becomes apparent in boys. The mother’s appetite increases and a drop in blood pressure can be seen with sudden movements.
  • Week: The baby weighs an average of 250 grams and is 15 cm in size. Darkening of color can be seen on the mother’s nipples, lips, cheeks and the midline of the body.
  • Week: The pregnancy is halfway through. The baby is clearly visible on ultrasound, and the heartbeat can be heard. This allows parents to bond better with the baby.
  • Week: This is a period when the rapid growth of the baby begins to decrease. The heart muscle and hearing develop. The baby may become responsive to sounds. The mother may experience back and waist pain and joint pain.
  • Week 2 : The respiratory system is well developed. However, respiration continues to be done through the placenta.
  • Week: This is the week when the baby’s limbs are fully developed. Therefore, all movements of the baby can be felt by the mother.
  • Week 2 : It is the last week of the 2nd trimester. The baby’s cough and hiccups can be felt by the mother.

What is the 3rd Trimester of Pregnancy?

The third trimester, the last period of pregnancy, is the period between the 25th and 40th weeks.

  • Week: The baby’s sense of taste and the nerves at the corner of the mouth develop as a preparation for the chewing function.
  • Week 2: The baby weighs approximately 750 grams and is 34 cm in size.
  • Week: The baby’s sleep and wakefulness periods begin this week. Its weight increases rapidly, reaching an average of 900 grams.
  • Week: This is a period when the mother gains weight more rapidly. If there is a blood incompatibility between the mother and father, a blood compatibility injection should be administered during this period. In addition, a sugar loading test should be performed in especially risky patients during this week.
  • Week: The baby’s lung development is almost complete. The expectant mother may experience heartburn and intestinal problems.
  • Week: The mother may experience emotional changes due to the effects of hormones and may feel tired.
  • Week: This is the period when false labor pains begin. False labor pains are defined as irregular pains. If the pains are continuous, the doctor should be informed.
  • Week: The baby’s fingernails, toenails and hair develop. The average size reaches 1700 grams and 42 cm. For this reason, the mother may experience severe waist and back pain.
  • Week: The baby gradually begins to move into the birth position. Weight gain accelerates.
  • Week: The baby weighs around 2100 grams. The mother’s belly grows accordingly and her mobility decreases.
  • Week: The baby’s kidneys are fully developed.
  • Week: The baby’s digestive system begins to digest the enzymes in breast milk.
  • Week 2: Contractions and vaginal discharge begin to increase.
  • Week: This is the week when the baby’s organs are fully developed and ready for the outside world. It weighs an average of 3000 grams and is 49 cm in size.
  • – Week 40: These are the weeks when birth takes place. The baby separates from the placenta with birth and becomes able to breathe and feed on its own.
