In cases where birth cannot be achieved through normal vaginal means, surgical intervention is called cesarean section, which is the removal of the baby by making an incision in the uterus. The method and manner of delivery is determined by the specialist physician during prenatal examinations. When normal delivery poses a risk to the health of the mother and the baby, cesarean section may be used. Cesarean section delivery is performed under general or local anesthesia in operating room conditions.

What is a Caesarean Birth?
Birth can be done with more than one method, which is determined by taking into account the health of the mother and the baby. These birth methods are classified according to factors such as medical intervention and the environment in which the birth takes place. Accordingly, birth methods;
- Normal vaginal birth, which occurs vaginally,
- Interventional vaginal birth that occurs vaginally,
- It is classified as an epidural birth performed with anesthesia.
- Cesarean section birth performed with surgical intervention,
In natural birth, no medical intervention is performed. The birth process is completed by following the body’s own biological course. In cases where natural birth would put the life of the mother and baby at risk, and vaginal birth is not possible, a cesarean section may be used.
Caesarean section is the surgical removal of the baby from the womb. The mother’s abdomen is opened with an incision in the operating room after general or local anesthesia is given. Then, the baby is reached through an incision made in the uterus and the baby is removed from the womb. During Caesarean section, epidural anesthesia is usually preferred over general anesthesia for the mother. Epidural anesthesia is a less risky method than general anesthesia. It also prevents the pain caused by labor pains from being felt.

What are the reasons for Caesarean delivery?
The reasons for choosing a cesarean section can be grouped into three: reasons related to the baby and placenta (partner), reasons related to the mother, and reasons detected during birth.
- Causes Related to the Baby and Placenta (Partner)
- The condition where the baby is breech, meaning that the baby’s feet or arms come first instead of the baby’s head,
- Detecting changes in the baby’s position in the womb,
- Fetal distress; signs of distress in the baby,
- Large baby weighing more than 4000 grams,
- Placenta Previa; that is, the abnormal placement of the placenta and blocking the birth canal,
- Placental Abruption, which means the premature separation of the placenta from the baby’s placenta, causing bleeding.
- Detection of fluid accumulation in the cavities of the baby’s head
- Maternal Causes
- Previous uterine surgeries, cesarean births,
- Rupture in the uterus,
- Hip dislocation,
- Deformations in the pelvis due to previous pelvic fractures,
- The expectant mother’s hip bones are narrow,
- Having cold sores or warts in the genital area,
- Infections that are present in the mother and carry a risk of being transmitted to the baby
- Chronic diseases such as diabetes, thyroid, heart diseases,
- Myomas and masses that will cause mechanical obstruction during vaginal delivery
- Causes Detected During Birth:
- A normal birth that lasts too long and cannot occur, problems encountered during birth
- Fetal distress detected during birth
How is a Caesarean Birth Performed?
Cesarean section is performed under anesthesia and in an operating room environment. Before birth, a vein is opened for the mother to be given the medication and fluids required for the surgery. Although general or local anesthesia can be used during birth, epidural anesthesia is generally preferred because it carries fewer risks. For epidural anesthesia, a special needle is used to enter the mother’s lumbar region and a catheter is placed on the outer part of the membrane surrounding the spinal cord. Thanks to the painkiller given to the mother through this catheter, the patient’s lower back is numbed.
During a Caesarean section, the baby is reached through incisions made in the mother’s abdomen and uterus, approximately 10-15 cm. After the baby is removed from the uterus, the incision areas are cleaned, stitched and closed. Caesarean section delivery is completed in approximately 30-40 minutes.
What Should You Pay Attention to After Cesarean Birth?
- For 24-48 hours after a cesarean delivery, the mother is kept under observation in the hospital.
- After 6-8 hours have passed since the operation, the mother is made to stand up and walk.
- A liquid diet is recommended for the first three days after birth.
- It can take up to 6 weeks for the incisions made during a cesarean section to heal completely. During this period, it is recommended that the mother avoid strenuous physical activities.
