In cases where birth cannot be achieved through normal vaginal means, surgical intervention is called cesarean section, which is the removal of the baby by making an incision in the uterus. The method and manner of delivery is determined by the specialist physician during prenatal examinations. When normal delivery poses a risk to the health of the mother and the baby, cesarean section may be used. Cesarean section delivery is performed under general or local anesthesia in operating room conditions.

What is a Caesarean Birth?

During pregnancy, pregnancy is monitored with regular examinations and tests to protect the health of the mother and baby. The aim of pregnancy monitoring, which begins in the first weeks of pregnancy, is to ensure that both the pregnancy process and the birth are carried out in the best possible way. Pregnancy monitoring, which begins with the diagnosis of pregnancy, includes examinations such as blood and urine tests and ultrasound imaging evaluated by the gynecologist.

What is Pregnancy Tracking?

Pregnancy follow-up covers all checks performed to evaluate the health of the mother and baby during pregnancy. Pregnancy lasts an average of 40 weeks. This period is calculated from the date of the mother’s last menstrual bleeding in women with regular menstruation. In women without regular menstruation, gestational age is determined according to the fetal measurement in the first ultrasound. During this 40-week period, the general health status of the mother, the health and development of the baby in the womb are evaluated with routine checks.

How to Track Pregnancy?

Pregnancy follow-up is also initiated by diagnosing pregnancy through blood and urine tests. It is evaluated whether the mother-to-be is at risk for chronic diseases such as diabetes and thyroid. It is checked whether there is a blood incompatibility between the mother and father.

Two weeks after the diagnosis of pregnancy, an ultrasound scan is performed to check the gestational sac inside the uterus. Thus, the suspicion of ectopic pregnancy is eliminated. In the following 2 weeks, a vaginal ultrasound scan is performed to listen to the baby’s heartbeat. The mother’s general health is monitored with repeated urine and blood tests throughout the pregnancy. The baby’s development in the womb is routinely checked with ultrasound imaging.

During the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, known as the first trimester, routine check-ups every 2-3 weeks are sufficient. Afterwards, the health of the mother and baby continues to be monitored monthly. In cases where the mother has chronic diseases, in expectant mothers who have experienced recurrent miscarriages, and in high-risk pregnancies, check-up intervals can be increased.

What Tests Are Used in Pregnancy Follow-up?

  • Urine test,
  • Blood test to determine blood group,
  • Blood count,
  • Blood sugar test,
  • Hepatitis test,
  • Rubella analysis,
  • Pap smear test,
  • “TORCH” infection tests,
  • Hormone screenings,
  • Ultrasound examinations are the main tests performed in pregnancy follow-up.

What are the Weekly Checks During Pregnancy?

  • In the 10th-14th weeks, a double screening test is performed to early diagnose diseases such as Down syndrome and the baby’s nuchal translucency is measured.
  • In the 16th-18th weeks, the baby is evaluated with ultrasound and a triple screening test is performed. If the test result is high, amniocentesis is applied for definitive diagnosis. With this method, a sample is taken from the amniotic fluid in which the baby is located, using a needle.
  • In the 20-22nd weeks, half of the pregnancy process is left behind and the baby’s organ development is largely completed. Thus, suitable conditions are provided for detailed ultrasonography. With 3 and 4 dimensional ultrasound, the baby can be viewed and analyzed in detail.
  • In the 24th-28th weeks, a sugar loading test is performed to detect gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes, which poses a risk to the baby, is also known as “gestational diabetes.” In expectant mothers with gestational diabetes, a suitable diet is given to keep their sugar levels under control by arranging their nutrition programs accordingly.
  • During weeks 28-36, the mother’s weight, blood pressure, and the baby’s ultrasound monitoring continue. In addition, the mother is also evaluated for urinary tract infections during this period.
  • After the week, the gynecologist determines the most appropriate method of delivery. In patients who are not expected to be able to deliver vaginally, a cesarean section may be planned. In addition, starting at week 32, NST tests are performed once a week in the risky patient group. If the pregnancy lasts longer than 40 weeks, the frequency of NST tests is reduced to once every 2-3 days starting at week 40. In the final weeks of pregnancy, the amount of amniotic fluid the baby is in is determined by measuring it with an ultrasound.
