IVF and ICSI

Understand each IVF decision before you make it.

IVF is a sequence of clinical and laboratory decisions, not a single procedure. The purpose of this page is to help patients prepare informed questions, not to recommend an individual protocol.

Embryology laboratory for IVF

Educational information · not a diagnosis

01

The treatment sequence

A typical pathway can include ovarian stimulation, monitoring, egg retrieval, fertilisation with IVF or ICSI, embryo culture, transfer and pregnancy testing. The exact sequence and timing depend on the clinical situation.

02

Questions for the clinic and laboratory

Ask how outcomes are defined, which patients are included in reported figures, how laboratory quality is monitored and how identification and witnessing procedures work. A percentage without age, diagnosis, treatment stage and denominator can be misleading.

03

Consent, add-ons and uncertainty

Informed consent should cover the purpose, alternatives, material risks, costs provided directly by the institution and the right to ask questions or pause. Optional add-ons should be discussed in terms of evidence, uncertainty and relevance to the individual patient.
